The U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment offered by Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03) that would prohibit funds appropriated in the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act from being used to require Turtle Excluder Devices (TED’s) on skimmer or butterfly type fishing nets.

“As South Louisiana’s representative, I know firsthand that Louisiana fishermen are some of the hardest-working people in the county; and I am proud to do all I can to support them,” said Landry. “My amendment prohibits a costly and unneeded regulation from being forced upon shrimpers in the Gulf of Mexico. I am thankful the House of Representatives, in a strong bi-partisan manner, supported our shrimpers and passed my amendment. I hope the vote is a strong signal to NOAA that this TED regulation will hurt businesses.”

“Through the hard work of Congressman Landry, Louisiana shrimpers could face one less hardship on our small businesses. For those of us who have struggled through disasters like hurricanes and the oil spill, we are grateful to have Congressman Landry fighting for us. Congressman Landry’s legislation ensures these proposed, unnecessary regulations will not burden our working families and fishermen,” said Clint Guidry, President of the Louisiana Shrimp Association.

#

Landry’s amendment passed the House by a vote of 218-201. A vote in the House on the full measure (H.R. 5326) is expected later today; if passed, the bill will go to the Senate.

For audio and video of the House floor debate on Landry’s amendment, you may go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RFKHliTBLE&feature=youtu.be.

Working to highlight one of the oil and gas industry’s tremendous safety and education tools, Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03) has invited Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) Director James Watson to the Mr. Charlie rig in Morgan City. In a letter to Watson, Landry highlighted the Mr. Charlieas a unique and realistic training instrument to prepare personnel and oil and gas workers for life offshore.

“Having grown up in a community immersed in the oil and gas industry, I learned at a young age that our most valuable natural resource is the hardworking men and women who ply their trade developing our energy. As such, I am constantly searching for ways to enhance the safety of our offshore workers and have found the Mr. Charlie, and the close approximation to real life conditions it provides, to be a very useful training platform,” wrote Landry.

“This rig serves as an invaluable resource to those just beginning their offshore career and BSEE employees charged with inspecting offshore facilities. Employing the Mr. Charlie in this manner will serve as integral step towards securing safe and abundant energy development in the Gulf of Mexico,” continued Landry – the U.S. House’s leading authority on domestic offshore drilling.

“I consider strong leaders to be most effective when they have experienced the challenges and successes of the organization which they lead. I hope you will accept my invitation to witness a small but important piece of our offshore oil and gas industry,” concluded Landry.

Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03), who famously held a “Drilling = Jobs” sign during the President’s national address on jobs, issued the following statement regarding the Obama Administration’s proposed rules on hydraulic fracturing on federal lands:

“Even though Al ‘Crucify Them’ Armendariz is gone, Washington continues to fire shots at our job-creating fossil fuel industry. As soon as energy prices fall ever so slightly, the Obama Administration goes into attack mode with more regulations and government red-tape. With over 12 million Americans out of work, the Administration should join me in assisting our job creators. I will continue to fight against the President’s ridiculous regulations, burdensome rules that come with not one shred of evidence from the EPA showing fracking harming the environment. I encourage my constituents, colleagues, and fellow Americans to be vocal throughout the upcoming comment period. Together, we can help put our neighbors back to work and end the continuous big government assault on our domestic energy jobs.”

Amid pressure from Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03), who – as reported by the well-respected, independent Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill – “introduced a House resolution Friday calling on an Environmental Protection Agency official to resign over 2010 comments comparing enforcement of clean-air laws to crucifixion”, Region 6 EPA Administrator Al Armendariz has resigned.

“From issuing an offshore drilling moratorium to subsidizing exploration and production in Brazil to threatening tax increases on domestic energy companies – the President has made his intentions clear: restrict, manipulate, and regulate domestic energy companies into extinction,” said Landry. “And the EPA’s web of regulations and hatred for oil companies does not make America safer; it only causes American job loss and high energy prices.”

Landry, a former small business owner in the oil and gas industry who famously held a “Drilling = Jobs” sign during the President’s national address on jobs, hopes Armendariz’s resignation leads the EPA to work with not overburden the fossil fuel industry. “It is high time to replace the nation’s regulators and elected officials with honest, experienced folks who err on the side of safe, prosperous energy development not cater to extreme, political agendas. I hope EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson replaces Armendariz with someone who will be proactive in securing our energy independence.”

Congressman Landry’s House Resolution 635 highlighted the importance of the oil and gas industry, detailed Armendariz’s attack on the fossil fuel industry, and called for Armendariz’s resignation.
“From issuing an offshore drilling moratorium to subsidizing exploration and production in Brazil to threatening tax increases on domestic energy companies – the President has made his intentions clear: restrict, manipulate, and regulate domestic energy companies into extinction,” said Landry. “The video footage of Armendariz is further proof the Obama Administration wants nothing more than to kill our fossil fuel industry.”

“The EPA’s web of regulations and hatred for oil companies does not make America safer; it only causes American job loss and high energy prices,” continued Landry.

“Americans should have no doubt that 4 more years of Mr. Obama in the White House is 4 more years of extremely high gas prices,” declared Landry. “So, for the sake of American families and businesses, I am not only calling for the firing of Dr. Armendariz but also that of his boss – President Obama.”

Congressman Landry has introduced House Resolution 635, calling for Armendariz’s resignation.
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03) issued the following statement after he voted against H.R. 3523 – the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act of 2011 (CISPA):

“Unfortunately, many in Washington are beholden to their next election not to the Constitution. Under the guise of ‘cybersecurity’, Washington politicians have jeopardized Americans’ Constitutional right to privacy by passing CISPA. I, however, am proud to have voted against this latest government overreach. As Benjamin Franklin once correctly said, ‘Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.’ The abuse by Congress over the last 30 years on our civil liberties must end.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03) applauded the withdrawal of a proposed rule (RIN 1235-A06) by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) dealing with youth who work in agricultural vocations.

“The rule was a direct attack on family farmers who teach the values of hard work, responsibility, and respect for our natural resources; so I’m glad this detrimental regulation was withdrawn,” exclaimed Landry. “I am proud to have supported the hard-working farmers in Louisiana, and I will continue to do all I can to preserve America’s family farms.”

“The average farmer is now in his 50s and soon facing retirement,” continued Landry. “Before these hard working men and women retire, we need to ensure they have the ability to pass along their knowledge to the next generation. Under this rule, the next generation would have never had a chance to learn from their elders.”

Landry, a former sugar cane worker and small business owner, has fought hard for his farming constituents including sending a letter to DOL Secretary Hilda Solis citing his support for youth in agriculture and cosponsoring legislation that would prohibit the proposed rule from being finalized. Landry’s efforts have earned the praise of local producers.

“As we fought against the proposed regulation, Louisiana farmers were blessed to have Congressman Landry championing our cause on Capitol Hill,” said St. Mary Parish farmer Jessie Breaux. “Congressman Landry completely understands the longstanding tradition of youth working on farms to gain valuable life lessons of hard work, character, and leadership. And Congressman Landry is fully aware of the critical importance youth are to the survival of family farms. We are extremely grateful for Congressman Landry’s support.”

NEW IBERIA, LA – Responding to the Veterans Affairs (VA) latest timeline on the health clinics for Southwest Louisiana, Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03) is again calling on the VA to utilize an accelerated funding approach to ensure Acadiana’s veterans get the care they deserve as quickly as possible. Congressman Landry wrote the VA today highlighting their previous commitment to discuss the sole source procurement strategy and requesting use of this expedited authority.

“41 U.S.C. § 3304(a)(7) allows a federal entity to use this expedited procurement authority when it is ‘necessary in the public interest.’ I can think of no federal project in South Louisiana that carries a greater necessity than quick construction of these facilities,” wrote Congressman Landry.

Landry, a veteran who has four veterans on his staff, is hopeful the VA will promptly respond to his request: “America should honor her veterans with the care they deserve,” said Congressman Landry. “I hope my letter will get the VA to finally answer whether they believe quick construction of Southwest Louisiana health clinics is of public necessity. I know it is and will continue to do all I can to ensure the health needs of our veterans in Southwest Louisiana are met immediately.”

#

Congressman Landry is a veteran of Desert Storm and left the military with the rank of Sergeant. He received the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, a National Defense Ribbon, an Overseas Training Ribbon, and the Louisiana War Cross from his eleven years of service as a member of the Louisiana National Guard.

NEW IBERIA, LA – Congressman Jeff Landry (R, LA-03), who represents the district most impacted by the BP oil spill and Obama moratorium, issued the following statement on the unfortunate two-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon tragedy:

“Today, as we remember the 11 lives lost in the tragic Deepwater Horizon accident, Sharon and I pray for the repose of the workers’ souls and the comfort of their families. And we pray for all affected by the spill and subsequent moratorium on drilling.

We have learned so much since the spill and have greatly improved the safety of our environment. And we continue to work hard to improve the safety of the brave men and women risking their lives extracting the energy that fuels our economy.

Unfortunately, many have allowed politics to block worker safety and job creation in South Louisiana. Putting elections over people not only dishonors the victims of Deepwater Horizon, but it also does no favors to their survivors. We deserve better.

I will continue to do all I can to get the Gulf back up and running in a safe and prosperous manner. And I will continue to fight for fair compensation to our commercial fishermen, shrimpers, and oilfield workers impacted by the President’s moratorium.”
